What is the Test Format of PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is a 2 hours test which is segregated into 3 parts: Speaking & Writing (54 – 67 minutes), Reading (29 – 30 minutes) & Listening (30 – 43 minutes)

PTE Academic Test Format

 

There are twenty types of questions which comes in PTE Academic, ranging from fill in the blanks, multiple choice to essay writing and analysing given information.

 

Part 1: Speaking & Writing: will complete in 54–67 minutes, there will be 25-27 questions of Speaking and 2-3 questions of Writing.

Part 2: Reading: will finish in approximately 30 minutes, there will be 14-16 questions of Reading

Part 3: Listening: completes in approximately 30-43, It is divided into 2 parts, 10 minutes to each Summarize Spoken Text and 20-23 mins to the second part.

Speaking and Writing

 

  • Personal Introduction: 25 Secs to prepare, 30 seconds: to speak, about you, why PTE, which country are you applying, purpose of appearing for PTE exam.

 

  • Read aloud: 6-7 questions, paragraph up to 60 words, Preparation Time: 35 to 40 Secs, Recording Time: 35-40 secs, scores based on Content, Pronunciation and Fluency.

 

  • Repeat Sentence: 10-12 questions, Prompt length is up to 9 seconds and Recording Time is up to 15 secs, scores based on Content, Pronunciation and Fluency.

 

  • Describe Image: 3-4 questions, Preparation Time: 25 secs (Study and prepare your response), Recording Time: 40 secs, scores based on Content, Pronunciation and Fluency.

 

  • Retell Lecture: 1-2 questions, Prompt length is up to 90 seconds. Audio begins automatically after 2-3 seconds, there may be an image or video related to the audio then Student gets 10 seconds to prepare post audio completed and recording time is 40 secs, scores based on Content, Pronunciation and Fluency.

 

  • Answer Short Question: 5-6 questions, Prompt length is up to 9 seconds. Audio begins automatically after 2-3 seconds, there may be an image related to the audio then student gets 10 seconds to answer the given question in one or few words. 1 point for right answer and 0 for wrong.

 

  • Summarize Written Text: 1-2 questions, Paragraph up to 300 words is provided. Student is provided 10 minutes and is asked to write a summary in between 5 – 75 words in one sentence. Word Count is provided at the bottom of the screen. CUT, COPY and PASTE tabs are provided to use while responding to the given question.

 

  • Essay: 1-2 questions, Statement of 2-3 sentences is provided and student has to answer in 20 minutes, has to write between 200 and 300 words. Word Count is provided at the bottom of the screen. CUT, COPY and PASTE tabs are provided to use while responding to the given question.

 

Reading

 

  • Reading And Writing: Fill in the Blanks: 5-6 questions, A paragraph up to 300 words appears on the screen with 5-6 blanks and with each blank 4 options are provided in drop-down menu box. Click on one option from the menu box which creates meaning and is grammatically correct.

 

  • Multiple Choice Multiple Answers: 1-2 questionsParagraph up to 300 words is visible on the screen and one statement with the multiple options is provided on the right of the screen, answer the question by clicking more than one option. Checkboxes are provided to select the multiple options.

 

  • Reorder Paragraphs: 2-3 questions, up to 4 to 5 sentences in the random order appear on the left side of the screen in the boxes. Arrange these in the right format in the given space.

 

  • Reading: Fill in the blanks: 4-5 questions, A paragraph up to 80 words appears on the screen with 3 to 5 blanks and with the list of words ranging between 6 to 8 words in the blue is given at the bottom of the paragraph. Drag the word from the box to the gap wheresoever you want to place.

 

  • Multiple Choice Single Answer: 1-2 questions, Paragraph up to 300 words is visible on the screen and multiple options is provided on the right of the screen, answer the question by clicking one option. Radio buttons are given to choose one answer.

 

Listening

 

  • Summarize Spoken Text:  1-2 questions, Prompt length is up to 90 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds, there may be an audio or video related to the task. Students will get total 10 mins to listen and write minimum 50 words and no more than 70 words.

 

  • Multiple Choice Multiple Answers: 1-2 questionsPrompt length is up to 90 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds, there may be an image or video related to the audio, answer the question by clicking more than one options. Checkboxes are provided to select the multiple options.

 

  • Fill in the Blanks: 2-3 questions, Prompt length is up to 60 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds. The transcript is visible on the screen and few of the words are missing. Type the missing word in the given gaps.

 

  • Highlight Correct Summary: 1-2 questions, Prompt length is up to 90 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds. 4-5 paragraphs are given as options but only one is correct. Choose the option that summarizes the paragraph in a proper way.

 

  • Multiple Choice Multiple Answer: 1-2 questionsPrompt length is up to 90 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds, there may be an image or video related to the audio, answer the question by clicking one option.

 

  • Select Missing Word: 1-2 questions, Prompt length is up to 70 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds, there may be an image or video related to the audio. At the last of the audio there is a beep, replace it with any of the given options that complete the recording.

 

  • Highlight Incorrect Words: 2-3 questions, Prompt length is up to 70 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds. There is transcript visible on the screen. The transcripts contain some errors, click on those which are not matching the audio.

 

  • Write from Dictation: 3-4 questions, Prompt length is up to 5 seconds. Audio begins automatically after few seconds. Listen to the sentence and type it in the given space. Audio plays once only.
