Essential strategies and tips to excel in PTE Listening Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers task.

Multiple-Choice, Multiple Answer is the second question type of Listening Module. It contributes score only to Listening. In this question type, the audio plays automatically and there are 4-5 options given below the statement. More than one response is correct in this given question. Select the right options which you think are the appropriate one as per the given statement. There will be 1-2 questions of Multiple-Choice, Multiple Answer.

Scoring Pattern of Multiple-choice: Multiple Answers

The score of Multiple-choice: Multiple Answers is added to Listening module only. Each correct answer carries one point but you will lose one point for any incorrect options. 

 

How to answer Multiple-choice: Multiple Answers?

  1. The audio related to the question starts after few seconds, in the mean while test taker is recommended to read the question first and skim the options if the audio hasn’t started. This gives the idea what the information is about. While looking for the answer, focus on the main idea and the writer’s purpose.
  2. The test taker should be attentive on the audio and should be taking notes of the keywords if required.
  3. While listening to the audio, the test taker should focus on the flow of the ideas and should panic if any part of the information is missed.
  4. Once the audio is finishing within 2-3 seconds answer the question by clicking on more than one option or their checkboxes, if not sure about the second option, then should select only one answer. If the second option goes wrong then you will lose the score.
  5. Don’t spend too much time on this question as it doesn’t carry that much of weightage.

Listening: 

  • Read the statement, this will help you to identify the topic to get the main idea of the audio.
  • Focus on the speaker’s purpose, his tone and the flow of the given information in the audio. This gives the idea how the speaker will continue with the information.
  • Identify the supporting text and the examples given in the audio.
  • Infer the meaning of the unfamiliar words given in the audio and try to find the relationships between the given details, facts and opinions.

 

  • Strategies to follow:

    Practice listening the lectures of 60-90 seconds and try to guess the purpose of the given audio to understand the attitude of the speaker.
  • Focus on different topics to build the interest in them and take notes while listening to the audio.
  • Listen to the podcast, TED lectures and small audios on YouTube of different topics and even in slow to fast speed.

     

    TEST TIPS

  • Time management is important as there are 1-2 questions of MCMA. Try to spend up to 2-3 seconds on each question.
  • Apply your knowledge about the topic.
  • Choose one answer first and then the second one only if you are 100% confident about it.
