Tips to Master the PTE Highlight Correct Summary Task

Learn essential tips to excel in PTE's Highlight Correct Summary task and boost scores.

Highlight Correct Summary is the fourth question type of Listening Module. It contributes score to Listening and Reading. In this question type, the audio plays automatically after 10 seconds and there are 4-5 options given in the form of summary and the test taker has to choose only one response which he thinks is the right one. The option you selected will be highlighted in yellow color.

Scoring Pattern of Highlight Correct Summary

The score of Highlight Correct Summary is added to Listening and Reading module and the correct answer carries one point but you will score ZERO point if the selected option is wrong.

 

How to answer Highlight Correct Summary? 

  • The audio related to the question starts after 10 seconds, in the mean while test taker is recommended to skim the given four summaries to have an idea of the topic.
  • The test taker should pay attention on the audio and is recommended to take notes of the keywords on the erasable notebook while listening.
  • The main focus of the student should be on the flow of the ideas, while listening the student should note down the keywords, abbreviations, symbols and should make arrows to understand the flow of the ideas.
  • The test taker should give the answer within 8-10 seconds once the audio finishes. Don’t spend too much time on this question as it doesn’t carry that much of weightage.
  • Eliminate the options which carry wrong or incomplete information. The correct summary will have the overall information from starting till end.

Listening

  • Try to identify the topic and its theme and main ideas. Don’t ignore the data given in the form of supporting points and examples.
  • Try to understand the academic vocabulary and try to infer the meaning of the unfamiliar words.
  • Follow the sequence of the information in the audio and then classify and categorize it accordingly.

Reading

  • While skimming the given summaries, understand the given information in terms of academic vocabulary and follow the chronological sequence by evaluating the text. 

     

 

Strategies to follow
 

  • Practice listening the lectures of 60-90 seconds and be quick in making the notes.
  • Focus on different topics to build the interest, as you don’t know which topic will be in the audio.
  • Listen to the podcast, TED lectures and small audios on YouTube of different topics and even in slow to fast speed.
  • Start practicing from 30 secs topic and increase it to 2 minutes, this will be the best exercise to concentrate on the audio and improve the listening skills.
  • Make the notes on the unfamiliar words, try to speak them and listen them to recognize the pronunciation.

 

Test Tips

 

  • Time management is important as there are 1-2 questions of HCS. Try to spend up to 8-10 seconds on each question of HCS.
  • Be quick in note taking only that will help you to choose the right summary from the given options.
