Comparison Between PTE Academic and PTE Core

Understand the key differences between PTE Academic and PTE Core to choose the right test.

Understanding PTE Academic and PTE Core:

Pearson is delivering TWO main tests of PTE, its ACADEMIC and CORE. The purpose of both is totally different as these tests cater the requirement of the different people.

PTE Academic: For Higher Education and Professional Registration:

  • accepted by more than 3500 universities and institutions globally by Australia and New Zealand, UK, Canada and USA and for migration, work visas and professional registration by Australia and New Zealand.
  • The main focus of the test is on academic English used in higher education.
  • It is all a computer-based test which evaluates Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening at the academic level.

PTE Core: For Work Permit and Immigration Needs:

  • PTE Core is the test which serves the purpose of those who are looking for immigration to Canada, or who is required to prove English proficiency for vocational purposes.
  • PTE Core evaluates English needed in professional or workplace context and in practical and non-academic context.
  • It is a computer-based English test with the duration a two-hour, assessing speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
  • It is approved by IRCC for immigration purposes under all economic classes.

Shared Components:

Both PTE Core and Academic are computer-based tests and uses AI for assessments. These tests are conducted in a small and friendly test centre environment. The duration of the tests are approximately 2 hours and the results delivered are within 24 hours to 5 business days. On the test day proper security measures like biometric data collection are conducted. Both tests have integrated skills assessment and 15 same question types.

What's the Difference?

The goal of the PTE Academic is to test your English abilities inside an academic context—consider university lectures and assignments. The PTE Core, on the other hand, focuses more on everyday English that one would use at work or in general situations.

Speaking and Writing: PTE Core is slightly shorter in this section, where 50 minutes is the requirement, unlike in the PTE Academic, where 54-67 minutes are expected. The two sections of the listening and reading are timed equally in both tests.

Question Differences:

In PTE Core Speaking, "Respond to a Situation" replaces "Retell Lecture" of PTE Academic. In this task, you will be given a situation to listen to and read about; upon completion of that, you will provide a 40-second response.

In Summarize Written Text of PTE Core gives you a bit more freedom. Instead of summarizing in a single sentence like in PTE Academic, you can write 25-50 words without the sentence restriction.

PTE Core replaces the essay with an email in writing module. You have to write a 100-word email in 9 minutes. It is a bit more practical and less formal than the essay in PTE Academic.

Summarize Spoken Text is more concise in PTE Core. You need to write a 20-30 words summary in 8 minutes, compared to 50-70 words in 10 minutes for PTE Academic.

In Listening Module, PTE Core completely removes the question type "Highlight Correct Summary".

So, if you are looking for a test that is more aligned to every day English or workplace situations, then PTE Core might be the way to go. If it is an academic setting that you are looking for, then PTE Academic continues to be the best thing out there!

The RIGHT choice as per the requirement:

If a candidate is moving to Canada and is looking for migration or work permit the PTE CORE is the best option available for him which fulfils all the requirements of migration or work visas. PTE Academic is the best selection for those who are looking for academic studies or professional activities in English-speaking countries.

PTE Core and PTE Academic are the two distinct tests catering the needs of the candidate taking the exam either for study visa or for migration. The proper understanding of the distinct features of PTE Core and PTE Academic helps you to choose the right test as per the requirement.
