1. Task Requirements:

  • Time: 9 minutes per email
    • includes reading the prompt, planning your structure, and typing the email.
    • Time management is crucial. Aim to spend:
      • 1–2 minutes reading and planning
      • 6–7 minutes writing and reviewing
  • Word Limit: 50–120 words: if less than 50 or more than 120 words are typed then “FORM” in scoring is negatively affected.
  • Type: Formal, informal, or semi-formal (depends on the prompt)
     

Note: After giving explanation to each bullet point, revise the statement quickly and then move to the next point.

 

2. Structure:

  1. Greeting: Language should match the content (formal or informal)
    Greeting (Salutation)
    • Formal: Dear Mr. Smith, / Dear Hiring Manager,
    • Informal: Hi John, / Hello Mike,

 

  1. Body Paragraphs
    • Opening sentence stating the purpose of writing a letter
    • Explanation: 1-2 relevant points based on each bullet point.
    • Include any reasons, possibilities, explanations, or examples as per the requirement.

    • Closing Sentence
    • End politely and diplomatically, showing expectation or intent.

    • Formal: Sincerely, Yours faithfully, Warm regards,
    • Informal: Best wishes, Warm wishes

 

  1. Scoring Criteria:
  • Content (0-3): Is the purpose stated properly followed with all the given bullet points?
  • Form (0-2): Word count (50-120 words), proper email format
  • Email Conventions (0-2): Greeting, Explanation, Closing
  • Grammar & Vocabulary (0-2): Variety and correctness, Combination of Simple, Complex and Compound Sentences
  • Organization (0-2): Logical sequence of the given statement.
  • Spelling (0-2): Consistent spelling style either British or American.

  • Identify the recipient, purpose of the letter, and required details as per the bullet points
  • List all the main points before writing, then write concisely and stay focused on the bullet points.
