Mastering Multiple Choice in PTE Reading

Essential strategies and tips to excel in PTE Reading's Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers task.

Multiple-Choice, Multiple Answer is the second question type of Reading Module. It contributes score only to Reading. In this question type, the given paragraph is with one question and 4-5 options. More than one response is correct in this given question. Select the right options which you think are the appropriate one as per the given statement. There will be 1-2 questions of Multiple-Choice, Multiple Answer.

Scoring Pattern of Multiple-choice: Multiple Answers

The score of Multiple-choice: Multiple Answers is added to Reading module only. Each correct answer carries one point but you will lose one point for any incorrect options.

 

How to answer Multiple-choice: Multiple Answers?

  1. Read the question first, this will give you the idea what information you have to look for in the given passage. Then skim the paragraph to get the right answer for the given statement.
  2. While looking for the answer, identify whether the answer is located in the whole paragraph or in parts, accordingly focus on the text.
  3. If unaware of the meaning of any word, then try to guess its meaning from the given text.
  4. Answer the question by clicking on more than one option or their checkboxes, if not sure about the second option the go with only one answer. If the second option goes wrong then you will lose the score.
  5. Don’t spend too much time on this question as it doesn’t carry that much of weightage.

  1. Identify the topic to get the main idea of the paragraph, for that identify the relationships between sentences and paragraphs.
  2. Evaluate the quality and usefulness of texts which includes the purpose, style, tone or attitude of the writer.
  3. Identify the supporting text and the examples given in the passage.
  4. Infer the meaning of the given paragraph and try to find the relationships between the given details, facts and opinions.

 

Strategies to follow:
 

  1. Practice skimming the long passages and summarize the main points to know the purpose of the paragraph or it infers.
  2. Take notes while skimming and use identification mark such as arrows to build the relation between the paragraphs.
  3. Practice and try to get the theme of the given passage that will help you to choose the right answer.
  4. Focus on different topics to build the interest in them and be quick in skimming them.
  5. While skimming the paragraph try to fine the goal of the writer, the description or explanation, purpose, theme, argument and any criticism if mentioned in the paragraph.
  6. Improve your Reading Skills to get the answer in the short period of time.

 

TEST TIPS

  1. Time management is important as there are 1-2 passages of MCMA. Try to spend up to 1.5 minutes on each passage of MCMA.
  2. Skim the passage to have a quick idea of the paragraph.
  3. Apply your knowledge about the topic.
  4. Choose one answer first and then the second one only if you are 100% confident about it.

Preparation Time

  • Understand the Question: Before attempting to read the passage, read the question and all answer choices. It will give you an idea of what to look for in the passage.
  • Skim for Keywords: Skim the passage quickly for keywords or phrases that match the questions or answer choices.
  • Eliminate Irrelevant Information: Identify parts in the passage that are irrelevant to the question; this saves the student’s time and effort by concentrating on only what is important.

 

While Attempting the Question

  • Read Thoroughly: After skimming, read relevant parts of the passage carefully to comprehend the context. This helps in making better choices.
  • Check All Correct Answers: The task type to select more than one correct answer. The number may vary by task, and with penalties for partial correctness, ensure you check all potential answers.
  • Avoid Guesswork: You will get partially penalized for incorrect answers in this task type, so do not select an answer unless you are sure it is correct.

 

Common Issues

  • Not Reading the Question: Directly going to the passage without properly reading the question will lead to incorrect choices of answers.
  • Choosing from Memory: In case a related topic was discussed earlier in the passage, DO NOT mark from memory; instead, revert and read that part of the passage again to confirm.
  • Ignoring Negative Marking: Avoid trying to mark extra options just in order to increase the number of options you would be marking as wrong options would reduce your scores due to negative marking.
